Planning – Day 2

Day 2 and one of the most overwhelming days. Now if there has only been two days and I’m already overwhelmed, you can tell where my overall anxiety levels are at.

I saw a travel agent that my mom has known since 2007 to discuss whether or not I was on the right track on planning my trip and lo and behold, I got most of it wrong.

As a single, female, 5’2 solo-traveller who just happens to be petite in size and looks easily snatchable, I was heavily advised to not take this trip on my own completely and join a tour group. Originally I have been very against tour groups because as a wanderer myself, I refuse to be trapped in some general itinerary that is told to me it’s the “best way to travel”. However, I completely forgot about Contiki which is a travel group specifically for 18-35 year olds so the connections and environment is much suitable for my age. Not only will my fellow travellers be around my age, but this travel group makes different kinds of travels dependent on what you are looking for. There is one that pretty much is only eating, sleeping and partying. Or, a completely independent based schedule or a little bit of mixing guided tours and free time. So, I guess I am going with Contiki and hopefully this will prevent the anxiety of travelling solo for my first big, solo, long-term trip.

My plans have shifted greatly from what I originally planned out. But here is a quick snapshot of what I have planned out.

September (Europe)

  • Sept 1-8 (France, 7 days)
    • Customizing a program with my travel agent, solo
  • Sept. 9-23 (Spain, Morocco & Portugal, 15 days)
    • Contiki
  • Sept. 24-Oct. 7 (France, 14 days)
    • Customizing a program with my travel agent, solo
      • Short trips to Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Berlin/Germany
      • Maybe explore/stay at other French cities

October (Japan + Break)

  • Oct. 7-15 (Tokyo, Japan, 8 Days)
    • On my own, visit some high schools I worked with in Tokyo, and Osaka
    • Day trips with the bullet train to Kyoto and Osaka
    • Touring Tokyo
  • Oct. 15-22 (Victoria, Canada)
    • A short break back home in Victoria before flying out to London, Ontario for my convocation!

November (South America)

I haven’t fully planned my trip down south because I still have some time and Europe is the one that’s coming up in less than two months. However I have a good idea on which countries I want to visit. Again, there will be changes made because I will likely be going with a tour group to South America and depends on their availability and programs.

  • Argentina
  • Uruguay
  • Peru (Machu Picchu)
  • Colombia or Chile

If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them!

December (Africa)

First round of planning Africa with Jess

This is a really exciting trip because I will be going with a long-time, childhood friend of mine. We are planning to visit southern parts of Africa including Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa. Again, very rough draft but we have a general idea on what we want. Hopefully we get a chance to sky-dive, camp under the stars and see Victoria Falls! More to come with everything.
